EV Glossary for T&T Buyers
Every electric vehicle term you'll encounter when researching Chinese EVs in Trinidad and Tobago — explained simply, without jargon.
EV Terms Defined
The umbrella term for any vehicle with an electric motor — BEV, PHEV, or REEV. In everyday conversation in T&T "EV" usually refers to any electrified vehicle.
Always drives electric — the wheels are only ever powered by electric motors. A small onboard gas generator recharges the battery when it runs low but never drives the wheels directly. The smartest fit for T&T's limited charging infrastructure. Learn more →
e.g. Forthing Friday
A pure electric vehicle with no gas engine. All power comes from the battery, requires home or public charging, which is a key consideration in T&T.
e.g. BYD Sealion 7, BYD Seal
Has both an electric motor and a gas engine — both can drive the wheels. Plug in for short electric trips; the gas engine takes over on longer drives. More mechanically complex than a REEV.
e.g. Haval H6 GT PHEV, BYD Shark
A traditional hybrid — the electric motor assists the gas engine to improve fuel economy, but you cannot plug it in. No charging required; the battery charges itself through regenerative braking and the engine.
e.g. Haval H6 HEV
How far an EV can travel before needing to recharge. Official figures are tested under ideal conditions — real-world T&T range will be lower due to A/C use and traffic. Expect 75–85% of the published spec.
e.g. Sealion 7 = 480 km official → ~370–400 km in T&T
The unit of energy used to measure battery size — think of it like your fuel tank. More kWh = more range.
China's official range-testing standard. CLTC figures are optimistic — real-world T&T range (with A/C) is typically 75–85% of the number quoted.
e.g. 480 km CLTC ≈ 360–400 km in T&T
The European range-testing standard — more conservative than CLTC and closer to real-world performance. If a car quotes both, WLTP is the more reliable figure for T&T buyers.
Safety technologies built into modern EVs — automatic emergency braking, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, and parking cameras. Authorised dealers ensure these are properly calibrated for right-hand-drive markets.
Wireless software updates pushed to the vehicle by the manufacturer — similar to a phone update. Availability varies by brand and market; confirm coverage with your local dealer.
